The Spires of Oltir
The eladrin are the oldest and smallest population of Oltir, the caretakers of a secret and hidden tradition which they have come to share with the elves after the cataclysm of the Great War. Before this age, they remained aloof from all worldly events, high in the mist covered valleys of the mountain tops. They lived quietly in their villages, nestled in enchanted grottos and surrounded by giant impassable cliffs. Communing with the fey and other cosmic forces, they labored in many dimensions to prevent the apocalyptic destiny which they foresaw for the world of Oltir, a prophecy handed down since the original generation of eladrin coalesced from the Astral Sea which spawned the Fey realms. However, they were ultimately unable to prevent the pact between the humans and arch-devils which was the final misfortune that fulfilled this horrible prophecy of destruction.
In the following age, the eladrin realized they would not be able to continue in the same way and began to seek a way in which they could move about the world and become more involved in its affairs. Once their elvish kin returned to them and sought refuge within their mountaintop communities, they realized they could accomplish this with a pact of common interest. They initiated the tradition of the bonded, which would pair elf and eladrin together, to journey out into the world and accomplish the healing of Oltir. When the eladrin were initially spotted moving about with their elvish brothers, it was a shocking discovery. This became the first sign of hope to the remaining peoples of the world, as the eladrin were previously believed to be only a legend. Their appearance in the world confirmed for the rest of the common folk that restoration was still possible.
Eladrin tend to act more as advisors, counselors, and directors in the bonded pairs in which they are found moving about the lands. Even when they are not physically present with the elf whom they are bonded, their influence is felt nonetheless. They will usually provide a broader insight into the overall strategy of the pair, while the elf is left to execute the proper moves to complete the mission. This is not always the case, however – as other pairs will share and switch between duties. And in some rare cases it is left to the elf to take care of almost everything, due to the unusual Fey conditions of certain eladrin.
